An agricultural-themed splash pad rooted in community spirit made possible by the passion of residents, businesses, and the generous support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation—proof that when people come together, anything is possible.

In June 2023, Openspace responded to an RFP for a new splash pad in Tavistock. After visiting the site and exploring the surrounding area, it was clear that agriculture is at the heart of this community. While an agricultural theme was new territory for us, we embraced the opportunity—designing distinctive, farm-inspired features that authentically reflected local identity.

We were proud to be awarded the project unanimously, with our original concept moving forward exactly as proposed. Installation was completed in fall 2023, with final detailing in spring 2024, just in time for a May long weekend opening.

Designing for rural municipalities is always rewarding—thoughtful collaboration, strong community pride, and projects that truly reflect the people they serve.

Objectives

A splash pad that feels like Tavistock

With a beautiful setting framed by mature trees, our goal was to create a welcoming gathering place where Tavistock children could play and cool off. The design reflects the character of the community while offering a one-of-a-kind splash pad experience. Features were thoughtfully arranged so younger children are near the shelter, with older kids positioned further into the park for an engaging and enjoyable layout.

Process

Turning a blank canvas into a farm-inspired splash pad

Starting with a blank site framed by a beautiful natural backdrop, the RFP allowed us to approach the design with creativity and flexibility. After a site visit and detailed analysis using Google Earth to map key infrastructure such as water service and drainage, we established the framework for the project.

With an agricultural theme guiding the design, we collaborated with Waterplay to adapt standard elements to suit the concept. Cat tails were transformed into wheat stalks, a rooster blaster complemented an existing fox feature, a tractor graphic was integrated into the magnify-eye, and the centrepiece “Sling Soaker” echoed a traditional farm slingshot. A farm scene graphic atop the water provided the final cohesive touch.

The design was exceptionally well-received: no features or colours required modification, reflecting the Town’s confidence in the submitted concept and the strength of the thematic design.

Overcoming site challenges

This project presented very few site challenges. Through careful pre-planning and coordination with the town staff, we were able to efficiently address basic considerations such as water service and drainage, ensuring the installation proceeded smoothly.

Supporting a strong project closeout

For Tavistock’s first splash pad, Openspace ensured every detail was complete, including designing and installing a custom rule sign on the precast building—a key element for safety, liability, and enhancing the user experience—helping deliver a polished and fully finished park.

Strong and mighty, with spraying legs, snout, and tail, plus a wild transparent mane for endless watery fun.

End Results

Harvesting smiles

The splash pad was completed on time and on budget. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on Friday, May 17, 2024, in light rain, yet the excitement was undeniable. Even on a “rainy harvest day,” smiles were abundant as everyone celebrated knowing the splash pad would become a popular community destination—a place for fun, family connection, and a lasting celebration of Tavistock’s agricultural heritage.
